Scope of application
Area of application
1. This Directive shall apply to the following products, hereinafter referred to as "products":
a) apparatus and protection systems for use in potentially explosive atmospheres;
(b) safety, control and adjustment devices intended for use outside potentially explosive atmospheres but which are necessary or contribute to the safe operation of the equipment and protection systems in relation to explosion risks;
c) components intended to be incorporated into the protective equipment and systems referred to in point (a).

2. This Directive shall not apply to:
a) medical devices for use in a healthcare setting;
b) protective equipment and systems where the danger of explosion is due exclusively to the presence of explosive substances or unstable chemical substances;
(c) equipment intended for use in domestic and non-commercial environments where potentially explosive atmospheres are created very rarely, solely as a result of an accidental gas leak;
(d) personal protective equipment which is regulated by Council Directive 89/686/EEC of 21 December 1989 on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to personal protective equipment (1);
e) marine vessels and mobile offshore units, as well as the equipment on board such vessels or units;
(f) means of transport, i.e. vehicles and their trailers intended solely for the transport of passengers by air, road, rail or waterway, and means of transport, when designed for the transport of goods by air, road, rail or waterway; vehicles intended for use in a potentially explosive atmosphere shall not be excluded from the scope of this Directive;
(g) products referred to in Article 346(1)(b) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.
